I am so excited about these. I've had this idea in my head for YEARS now. I know a lot of you can relate to just feeling overwhelmed and uninspired by "the usual".

I decided THIS was the year to do it. I needed something fresh and new and I'm hoping it provides the same for my friends, clients, and family.

Step 1 - Talk my husband into building me a large (heavy)cube.

Step 2 - Find PJs for this season.

and guess what - I added Hanukkah PJs too!

Step 3 - Go to the Christmas Tree Shop for decorations. (And silently cheer when I find bows and a tiny deer that exactly match the PJs I had picked out!)

Step 4 - Find adorable models. (It's my son and my dear friend Jeannie's daughters).

Miles from Chadds Ford, Glen Mills, and Philadelphia.

"It's a lot of work."

"What is?" I asked

"You know, planning a family photography session."

"What do you mean?" I asked.

"Between coordinating the time, picking out outfits, talking my husband into smiling, trying to figure out if the weather will be nice...it's just all so stressful."

...That's the conversation I had with my girlfriends not too long ago. I'd be lying if I didn't say I was gobsmacked. I had never really considered the stress of it from my clients' perspective. For me, it's fun and exciting and so great to meet new people. I'm confident in what I do and I go into each session ready to give it my all. I get excited for new places, new ideas, new families...

Regardless of my enthusiasm, I realized that this time of year really can be stressful for people so an idea was born. I was going to create the easiest photography session ever.

One weekend.

Indoors. No need to worry about weather - I have a studio.

Beautiful set. It's simple and beautiful. A little splash of red and a fun lifestyle setting on a bed means your kids are going to have fun and relax instantly.

My little girl's dream mermaid bedroom. https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2016/6/my-little-girls-dream-mermaid-bedroom I was 8 years old, standing in the middle of a paint store - Airbase Carpet Mart? Market? Something like that. I was facing tower after tower of wallpaper rolls. We were moving and I was getting a new room! I remember it vividly. I remember my mom's excitement as she pulled out the pale yellow wall paper and with the small pink flowers. We bought matching everything - bedspread, pillows, lamp shades, curtains, wall paper, border, EVERYTHING.

I remember that room vividly.

I wanted my girl to have that, to have a dream bedroom to move into.

When we bought it this house to renovate, I imagined a big HGTV reveal where I opened the door and the whole house was done. Silly me.

BUT, if I couldn't have that, I certainly wanted my girl to have it. So, we sent the kids to Nana and Grandpa's for the weekend and we went to work.

I've had a few people shoot me a message asking for the details since posting her room on facebook and Instagram so I thought I'd put it all in one place:

The inspiration: MERMAIDS.

She helped picked out the colors: Behr Marquee - Celestial Light & Whipped Mint We painted before we moved in so here are a few picture of the colors with her old bedding:

I decided to start a pinterest board to collect ideas:

https://www.pinterest.com/lindseymixphoto/kids-bedrooms/

Then we picked out the bedding. Most of the mermaid bedding was too cartoonish. Then we found the Isla bedding and Mermaid sheets from Pottery Barn and we knew we were onto something!

I shopped around for loft beds for quite some time. I hemmed and hawed over the expense. I decided that getting an inexpensive bed would allow a few more splurges. This one is from walmart: http://www.walmart.com/ip/29845496

She was begging for a canopy for her bed. While shopping, I found this amazing jelly fish at HearthSong

Then it was just a matter of shopping for some artwork on Etsy and pulling it all together.

Seeing the Drywall - I burst into tears. https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2016/2/seeing-the-drywall---i-burst-into-tears Wow, this has been a LONG time coming. We realized this weekend that we first saw the house almost TWO years ago next month. I remember it as clearly as if it was yesterday. I remember exactly where I was standing in the front yard when I looked at Chad and said "Well, wouldn't this be crazy?"

This weekend, seeing the house with drywall up, was by far the most excited about it that I've been in MONTHS. In fact, maybe the most excited since we first saw the architect's plans.

I walked in and I really saw my home. I saw the desk area where I'll spend time editing, the island wall where the kids and I will sit watching Chad cooking, the playroom with a window sill deep enough to sit and nooks and cranny's that will house giggles galore, a master suite with a soaking tub for after my long runs, bedrooms and a bath just for the kids, a guest suite, and finally my beautiful studio.

It was the studio that brought my to tears. Looking at that beautiful space and imagining filling it with clients and my own family to photograph was just overwhelming. I could finally see my dream again.

The next several weeks are going to be so hard, but with love and a lot of helping hands, I can already feel it becoming a home.

A long, long overdue update. https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2016/2/a-long-long-overdue-update My last update was September 7th. It's hard to believe.

Honestly, things started going downhill after my last post. Everything was just taking so long and the frustrations kept me from writing. It's not fun to write "We're still waiting..." over and over so I just went silent.

Through all of the rotten stuff we've dealt with - the silver lining is that we accepted an offer on our house in Hockessin. They are selling their own house so there is no closing date just yet. That helped us relax some to have that tiny piece underway.

Fortunately, we' have things moving again and we're really making progress. Since the last time I posted, the framing was finished, windows & exterior doors have been added, electrical and plumbing rough ins have been completed, and insulation went in last week!

Today they're putting up the drywall! I'm so darn excited I can't stand it.

Next, is where it's going to get hard. We're going to be priming, painting, and installing most of the floors ourselves. We're not sure exactly how long to expect that to take so we're thinking we might be moving in April-ish, only 7 months later than we had originally thought!

So, without further ado, here are some progress pictures:

We have a third floor! https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2015/9/we-have-a-third-floor Well, September 4th came and went and we're still not done with framing. It was a combination of vacations for our contractors and some small snaffus that took up some major time.

The big issue of the week was that the measurements for the stairs/third floor dormers weren't correct. Unfortunately, the house isn't the perfect rectangle we thought it was...more of a sort -of trapazoid. That means that all of the measurements shifted a tiny bit, add that to the correction it takes to fix it and we had a big issue. There was no support for one of the third floor dormers.

When I arrived on Tuesday the news was pretty doom and gloom. The options presented were to get rid of the dormers completely, or to move them off center. I was not thrilled. We stood in the foyer and hemmed and hawed and talked over the possibilities. Someone even mentioned a fake dormer? Honestly, I'm still not sure what that is...Eventually, we figured out a way to add support to the underside and the problem was solved. Once the house is built, no one will ever know it wasn't part of the plan.

So, slow and steady...

We went today and took the kids to see it. It's SO amazing to see it really coming together...to see walls going UP instead of coming down. The brick work on the front looks amazing and to see the dormers going up....ahhhhh....so relieved.

You can see the roof rafters going up and one of three dormers. You can also see the brick repair to the front. There used to be a porch there:

Where I'm From | Lindsey Mix Photography https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2015/8/where-im-from-lindsey-mix-photography I'm participating in a course called Heart & Vision. I was a bit skeptical to be perfectly honest. Life is busy right now and I wasn't sure if it was a good time to take on something introspective...which probably means it was the exact time to slow down and really pause to look at life.

Anyway, the assignment for last week was to take a look at a famous poem by George Ella Lyon called Where I'm From. Then, we were to take inspiration fro the poem and create our own version. It was daunting. How do you capture all of who you are in what's essentially just a few words?

Well, here's my best shot.

I am from grandparents without two pennies to rub together, from parents that worked hard to give us everything.
I am from patience and teaching opportunities. I am from Sheryl and Schuy and Jay
I am from pride. From an older brother who didn't want his little sister pestering him.
I am from tea towels and a perfect house. I am from shamrocks, Easter eggs, witches, Santas, and a wreath for each.
I am from Little Women and Heidi, from hiding under the covers with a book and a flashlight.
Straight A's and a hole in the door from my temper tantrum.
I am from my dad building a snowman waving at me in front of a window when I was too sick to go out and play. Sledding. Dog breath and snow clumps in fur.
I am from seven layer cookies, pecan pie, apple dumplings, and lemon bars.
I am from catching sunfish on a dock, snoopy pillow cases, playing in apples trees and dropped pies.
I am from sports team benches and parades.
I am from the smell of freshly cut grass, bike rides, and tree climbing. From friends stuck in trees with their jacket caught on branches - laughing too hard to help.
I am from Honeysuckle and culd-a-sac adventures.
I am from salt water and jelly fish stings; suntans, swimmer's ear, and green hair.
I am from hot summer days baking in the sun and cold winters with the smell of a wood fire wafting through the air.
I am from love.

We've Ordered Kitchen Cabinets| Lindsey Mix Photography https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2015/8/weve-ordered-kitchen-cabinets-lindsey-mix-photography I think almost everyone can agree that the best part of a home renovation is picking out interior finishes that fit your taste, your style, that represent you.

It's funny, I'm taking a new photography course called Heart & Vision and we were asked recently to journal about our home design and how it reflects who we are. As I look around our current home, it's full of colors; yellows, greens, blues, even red. It's the perfect representation of who we were when we moved in. We weren't even married. Everything was new and exciting...wedding planning, babies, new jobs....! The colors seemed to reflect that...all of the newness and vibrancy that matched that stage in our lives.

I think it's so interesting now that we are looking at a much more neutral color palette; fresh. new. calm. bright. organic. Part of it is that my photography is having a HUGE influence over my design eye. I am really drawn to monotones - similar shades of the same color or similar colors. It brings me peace to be in a space like that and I'm SO excited to share my vision with my family. Fortunately, Chad is along for the ride. He has opinions, of course, sometimes in surprising ways, but he has overall handed the reigns over to me.

Anyway, we knew we wanted a white kitchen. I'm craving light and bright after living in the middle of the woods for the past 7 years. Now, don't get me wrong, Arden is far from an open field on a hill top, but the house itself does get some great afternoon light. Pair that with some light floors, light gray walls, and a white kitchen....ahhhhh just thinking about it relaxes me.

So, we went to a few cabinet places and honestly, we were pretty surprised by the lack of customer service just about everywhere we went. The local places were busy with sales people that seemed annoyed to be bothered. We ended up in the cabinet departemnet of Lowes with the most patient, kind kitchen designer we'd met, Mike.

We sat down and got to work. We went with a semi-custom cabinet in "Coconut", which is just a shade or two darker than a true white. It will have gray detailing. The door style is called Arden. We were a bit on the fence with a few styles until we found the name...since that's the community we're moving into, it just seemed to be the right fit.

We told Mike we were ready to buy the next time a great sale came up. Sure enough, a few weeks later he gave us a call and we got an outstanding deal on not only our kitchen cabinets, but custom cabinets for the mudroom too!!

So, without further ado, here is the almost final kitchen design.

The design has been slightly altered in the sense that there will not be glass cabinets on the sides of the stove and all of the way across the top. There will only be three glass cabinets total - the 3 in the top row directly above the stove and to either side. I went back and forth on this but in the end, the need for hidden storage won out over design.

Lowes Kitchen Design

This is the back of of the island. From left to right is a pantry, dishwasher, sink, then trash/recycling. The left end of the island will have cabinet doors to hide more pantry items and the right end will be open shelving to the dining room.

Lowes Kitchen Design

Chad's big wish list was a 36" range and double ovens. We ran into a bit of an issue with where to put the microwave. So, there will be a range and a wall oven/microwave over on the right. It shows a cabinet now but that cabinet will actually be a microwave.

Lowes Kitchen Design

The only other thing missing is the Coffee Bar. I wanted a nice clean, clutter free look so I wanted a place to hide the coffee maker since that's the one appliance that will live on the counters. So, instead of a full pantry cabinet next to the mudroom door, there will be a lower cabinet with a counter top and an upper cabinet. That cubby will hopefully have a water spout and electric so the coffee can live there!

Lowes Kitchen Design

And there you have it. One more decision made.

The Sleepiest Newborn Ever | Lindsey Mix Photography https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2015/8/the-sleepiest-newborn-ever-lindsey-mix-photography There are few things a newborn photographer loves more than a prepared Mama! Sarah was definitely an earlier booker, contacting me in January for her July due date!! That seems to be a trend these days and I'm really enjoying it since the type-A planner in me  loves to have a schedule mapped months in advance. So, as soon as Sarah reached out, I knew we were going to be a great match!

June 29th I recieved an email saying that she was 37.5 weeks and signs were pointing to sooner, rather than later. I have to admit, part of me didn't believe her. I think at 36.5 weeks, we're ALL hoping for sooner rather than later and hyper analyzing everything. Sure enough, that litte girl made her appearance only a few days later!!

Introducing Annabelle; the sleepiest newborn I've ever met.

Lindsey Mix Photography--3Lindsey Mix Photography--3Newborn Baby Girl by Lindsey Mix

When I arrived, Sarah and Craig were both smiling and the absolute picture of new parent bliss. Neither looked weary or tired. I soon found out why, they had the easiest newborn in the entire world!

Annabell was sound asleep when I got there so we immediately started with her individual pictures. I looked around for light, got myself set up and off we went.

Still sound asleep, we moved into the nursery for some family pictures. This nursery was a total dream, beautiful light and designed beautifully for their new baby girl.

What Roof? | Lindsey Mix Photography https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2015/8/what-roof-lindsey-mix-photography We've heard it a thousand times. "You guys are crazy." or "We could never do that." or "You've lost your minds". We always laugh and calmly reassure the people around us that we're comfortable with what we're doing and totally sane.

That was until I saw the house last week without a roof. Not just missing a roof, but with it's roof crumpled on the ground in the front yard. The one thing I wasn't prepared for during this whole process was how upsetting all of the demolition would be. Every.single.time. something gets torn down, it makes me so sad. It's such a strange feeling, to be so attached to somewhere I've never lived. Since then, the third floor has been completely removed and the subfloor for the 2nd floor has been removed.

So, standing on the ground in what will be our foyer, you can straight up to the clear blue sky...or today, stand there and get rained on...

It's exciting to see the progress but it's hard to see someone's life's work falling to pieces. So, now that the roof is off, the framing is really going to get moving. The first floor framing is about 2/3s done. Now, they'll start moving up and we have a tentative date for the framing to be done: September 4th. That means, new roof, all of the walls, a real house will be underway!

Beyond the house construction we are trying to get our house in Hockessin ready to go on the market. I've been a maniac cleaning and purging. We'll likely put it on the market in mid September. We've also got the kids set up (mostly) at their new schools.

It's a lot.

I just told a friend it feels like when I first brought home my baby girl, I had NO idea how mind-consuming it would be to have a baby. This feels similar. I'm always thinking of what's next, what haven't we done, what do we need to order, what do we need to pick out, what haven't we thought of?

It's a lot.

It's A LOT.

But, one foot in front of the other, one decision at a time and we'll get there. This time next year, it will all be a blur.

Heartbreak & Slow Progress| Lindsey Mix Photography https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2015/7/heartbreak-slow-progress-lindsey-mix-photography We are SO long over due for an update.

The delay in an update has been two-fold. The first issue was that while the contractors were removing the roof on the round room of the house, part of it collapsed. To say I was heart broken would be a gigantic understatement, a horrible, disappointing understatement. I didn't talk about it for days and didn't share with family for a while either because I just didn't want to talk about it.

I loved that room. I loved the super quirky windows and how much it spoke of the person who had built it. The character was alive in that room and now it's gone. We brought the whole wall down to around 3 feet and will build the rest with windows to essentially turn it into a sunroom. It will be lovely...and I know I'll love it, but it's going to take a while to get over the heartache of losing what was there.

The second issue arose when we had our mason come back out to take a look at how to handle what had happened to the round room. He discovered that both chimneys on the house were insufficiently supported/crumbling and needed to be removed. We needed engineering plans to detail how to remove them to make sure no further damage happened.

So, it's been several weeks and we're back to making some progress. The chimneys have been removed, the stone poured, radiant floor installed, windows opened, the mudroom door cut into the house, the back doors bricked up,  and just yesterday the concrete slab was poured inside. It was SO exciting to go inside today and get a feel for what the space will feel like!

We're excited that the next few weeks are going to move quickly and I'll have lots of updates to post!

A Wilmington Newborn Session| Lindsey Mix Photography https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2015/6/a-wilmington-newborn-session-lindsey-mix-photography You know when you meet someone and you think "I know this is going to go well."? That's how I felt the minute I meant Lauren. She and her husband, Eric, have the kind of easy demeanor that instantly made me feel welcome into their beautiful home in Wilmington, De. They smiled frequently and seemed totally relaxed welcoming a newborn into their family with big brother Andrew who was 18months old.

I'll confess, I expected may-ham. I mean, I have an 18 month old, I know the kind of tornado they are and the busyness it takes to keep them occupied. This parental duo never once seemed frazzled or even tired. I was totally amazed!

I took a little tour of their home trying to find the best light. As soon as I saw their master bedroom with stunning glass doors and a skylight, I was in photography heaven!

Baby Charlotte was out cold and a total dream:

They piled onto the bed and were so fun! This little girl is going to to be surrounded by so much love & laughter.

Demolition & Renovation| Newborn Photographer in Wilmington, Delaware takes on a renovation. https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2015/5/demolition-renovation-newborn-photographer-in-wilmington-delaware-takes-on-a-renovation I stopped by the new place tonight to take some pictures!  A lot of people have been asking for updates so here they are! The bank financing came through and we were able to start writing checks! The demolition has started and the new plumbing is going in.

We had a minor (expensive) set back when they discovered termite tubes in the sub-flooring. The original quote to drill through the concrete pad sub flooring that was already in place was over $4500. However, we were told if we broke up the slab so they could just spray, it would be just over $1000.

So, Chad spent almost his entire Memorial Day weekend over there breaking up the slab with a sledge hammer, crow bar, and a lot of sweat (and maybe some tears). I stayed home with the kids and worked my butt off on some landscaping. I dug up two new flower beds, planted shrubs & flowers, and spread 3 yards of mulch. Thankfully my parents stopped by to help out some too!

I also had these two awesome helpers:

The Most Valuable Photos I have | Lindsey Mix Photography https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2015/4/the-most-valuable-photos-i-have-lindsey-mix-photography We take pictures of our kids daily. Iphone; DSLR; point and shoot. I am taking pictures of them daily. I take pictures of them with my family, my parents, my husbands parents, friends, my husband....but I have never just taken pictures of my husband. Strange actually, now that I'm thinking about it. I've been taking pictures every day for the last 240-something days and don't have any solitary pictures of the man I love...at least not until now.

Anyone that knows my husband knows that he is always just a few seconds away from a joke. In fact, when I first met him, his sense of humor was so dry, it was often lost on me. I wouldn't realize he was joking and then would be embarrassed only moments later that I "fell for it."

I will never forget the night we sat down for dinner with his parents for the first time. Meeting "the parents" is always a daunting task and you're never really sure how it's going to go. But, within the first 5 minutes of sitting down at the dinner table, his dad cracked some ridiculously terrible joke and the pieces of the puzzle all came together for me. I saw who my husband was and where he came from.

He makes me laugh. It's part of the reason I married him. It may be THE reason I married him. He brings joy to our days that could otherwise become monotonous. And now he's teaching our kids.

We've been married 6.6 years now. We have two kids, steady jobs, and a new house in the pipeline. Life is good. It's so easy to settle into that and just march through life one day after another without telling each other how much they mean to use. That's what this post is; a written declaration of my unwavering love for the man I married.

I started a photography class recently that requires daily practice. My daughter was worn out from a weekend of photography with mom so my poor husband was my victim.

So, I sat him in the middle of the floor and turned him the way I wanted. In true Chad fashion, he burst out laughing. And couldn't stop.

I started shooting and laughing and telling him to be serious.

He couldn't.

It didn't matter though, because regardless of what my assignment was, I got something so much more valuable, I captured him in the way I see him; the beauty of his soul and the joy he brings to my family with a single awesome open-mouthed-eyes-shut belly laugh picture. He will never know how special these are to me.

If I never took another picture in my life, having these would be enough.

What's going on with the house? | Lindsey Mix Photography in Wilmington, Delaware https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2015/4/whats-going-on-with-the-house-lindsey-mix-photography-in-wilmington-delaware I've fielded quite a few questions lately about the progress of our renovation property and I keep promising to update the blog so here it is!

We are stalled temporarily while we wait for financing to come through. We have the plans almost completely wrapped up minus some minor revisions, we have our contractors selected, and we are otherwise ready to roll.

The property is incredibly unique and traditional banks kept telling us they wouldn't be able to get an accurate appraisal because there are no comps in the area. It's beyond frustrating that they rely so heavily on computers now that when a property doesn't work with their "formula" they just don't offer anything!

Luckily, there is a Building & Loan in the area that still believes in the value of a family and supporting people when the endeavor otherwise makes sense. I spent a few weeks putting together a formal proposal for them and Chad and I met with the at the house over the weekend just to demonstrate the scope of the project.

They don't meet again until April 28th to discuss the proposal. Once a decision is made, we'll either move forward with the financing which could take a few more weeks between getting the paperwork in order and signing everything or, we'll have to explore other avenues.

We feel like the proposal we put together was very strong and we're optimistic that it will all work out the way it's meant to.

Meanwhile, we have Sutton all signed up for first grade at her new school and we'll take her over there some time soon to play on the play ground.

Oh, and don't forget my Spring Special is underway - if you're thinking about booking a session, now is the time: LOOK HERE

I'm still shooting daily and working on my 365 so that will be my next big blog update. But for now, here's a recent favorite:

199 Days of Photos | Lindsey Mix Photography https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2015/3/199-days-of-photos-lindsey-mix-photography I had now idea when I started this project last August, just how hard it would be. I haven't been able to do it. I missed a few days in December and I've missed a few more since then. But, what I've realized is that the project is more than a simple task to check off on a daily calendar. It's a way to capture the fleeting moments and to grow my photography skills.

Early in February I flew out to San Jose for a conference. I packed my camera but really only took it out just a handful of times.

Some Family Photos | Lindsey Mix Photography https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2015/2/some-family-photos-lindsey-mix-photography Do you ever get tired of hearing how busy people are? Do you ever get tired of SAYING how busy you are? I think it's just that time of year. It's STILL winter. The holidays are long past over and everyone has recovered. School is back in full swing but low and behold, summer camp registration is starting. And 2015-2016 registration. And screening tests. And we're building a house. And I'm running a photography business. Are you tired of hearing me say how busy I am? How about some pictures instead?

The Floor Plans | Lindsey Mix Photography in Wilmington Delaware https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2015/2/the-floor-plans-lindsey-mix-photography-in-wilmington-delaware We went to settlement on our renovation project December 5th. Here we are more than two months later and finally wrapping up our floor plans. If you ever meet our architect, tell him we said he's the most patient person we've ever met. We handed him 4 walls, tons of windows, and nothing else and asked him to make us a house. Oh and we added a wish list:

Great Room/Open Concept

Fire Place

Desk in Great Room (I want to be able to edit while my family hangs out)

Eat in kitchen island

Walk in pantry

MudRoom

First Floor laundry (I Know I'm in the minority on this one but if my laundry was on the second floor it would NEVER get done)

Multipurpose Room (AKA Playroom)

First floor shower for anyone that sleeps in the multipurpose room

A master bedroom that's not too small and not too big

A master bath with dual vanities, a stand alone tub, a water closet, and access to the closet

A walk in master closet

Dual Vanity in the kid's bath

A bench for new moms to rest while they head upstairs to the PHOTOGRAPHY STUDIO (YIPEEEEE)

A photography Studio

A guest bedroom

A bathroom that's accessible to photography clients

STORAGE

Then we asked him to cram it all in to a 30x40 rectangle. He's a SAINT.

So, here they are the *almost final floor plans and elevations.

FIRST FLOOR. We'll park at the right end of the house and come in through the mudroom. Guests will park and come in through the front door. Need some minor changes, maybe a deeper pantry, and the bathtub will be a shower instead. Also, the island will be rectangular instead of rounded so there's more room to sit.

Demoliton Day | Lindsey Mix Photography https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2015/2/demoliton-day-lindsey-mix-photography This weekend we recruited my dad and some very dear friends to help us tear out the guts of our future home. There wasn't much there to start with but there sure was a lot of work.

Here's a video from before they got started. It's only the first floor but it'll give you an idea:

Demolition Day

They guys all got to work and filled an entire dumpster full of plumbing, insulation, cupboards, drywall, bath tubs, tiles, water heater, and according to my husband and lot of blood, sweat, and tears. LOL

Here's what was left at the end of the day. There's still plenty more to do but we have to call for a new dumpster tomorrow because the one there now is full!

House on Fire | Lindsey Mix Photography https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2015/1/house-on-fire-lindsey-mix-photography I mentioned in yesterday's post that along with my Project 365, I'm also participating in a Project 52, which basically assigns a photography theme to each week of the year. It's nice to have some ideas.

Week 2 of this year was "House on Fire".

The irony of this is that just recently, my 5 year old has been asking a lot of questions about what we would do if our house caught on fire. They've been talking about fire safety at school and while I know it is most definitely a neccessary conversation, it breaks my heart that her eyes have been opened to the possibility. It feels like a tiny bit of her innocence is stripped away every time something like this is brought to her attention. Fires, car crashes, death, stranger danger. It's daunting.

So anyway, the assignment was to take 10 minutes and collect everything you possibly would want to save and then photograph it. (The assumption is that everyone else would be safely out of the house).

You would think that as a photographer, my instinct would be to collect the pictures, right? Well, they're all the cloud.

In reality, there are likely a bazillion things that I would collect if I had 10 minutes but honestly, none of them are as dear to me as my childhood teddybear.

He was given to me when my parents came back from a vacation where my brother and I had been left with my grandparents (I think).  I don't remember getting him. I just remember that I always had him. I hugged him and carried him around his neck until the stuffing moved out of it completly so now his head just flops over sideways.

I gave him to my daughter a few years ago. I could have sat him on the shelf in her room to make sure he'd stay whole, but that's not where his magic lies. He brings comfort and love. I gave him to her when she started having bad dreams. I told her that he carries so much love in him that he'll protect her from nightmares or comfort her if she has one. His long limbs and crazy shape are perfect for letting you know he's there by your side. His fur is matted down and his various appendages have been sewn back together more than once. His eye is loose and desperately in need of a little love from Doc McStuffins and he could use another appointment with the needle and thread.

"Mommy, if the house catches on fire, will I have enough time to get Bubba?"

My voice caught in my throat and tears sprang to my eyes. She was crying. Just the very thought of losing him was too much for her. It was too much for me too.

I wanted desperately to bring her comfort and to tell her "Yes. We'll save him." but I couldn't risk it. I couldn't offer her that piece of solice. Five year olds are too literal. Instead I said "There is nothing more important during a fire than getting out safely. We'll make sure the firemen know to rescue him, ok?"

The next day "House on Fire" came up as the assignment.

The Little Moments | Lifestyle Photography in Wilmington Delaware https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2015/1/the-little-moments-lifestyle-photography-in-wilmington-delaware I started this project, taking one photograph daily for 365 days back in August. At the time, I wasn't sure what it would turn into but I knew I wanted to do it. I wanted to practice using my camera. I wanted to slow down and capture the little moments. It has been such fun not only to challenge myself to come up with a variety of subjects but also to look at the past 160-something pictures and see how our lives are moving along.

It's this project that has inspired a new all-inclusive lifestyle package for my photography business. I have the joy and privledge of photographing my kids daily. I have prints on the walls and albums to design yearly. So many people want a family photo. I get that, but in the grand scheme of photography, that's the easy one...the ones I think are most dear to me are the bath pictures, the hair braids, playing board games together, reading...it's those things that fill our life with smiles and joy. It's those moments that I want to memorialize forever.

Here's my girl letting my practice with my Nikon SB600 speedlight (Flash). She was sitting patiently playing with her nightgown.

In addition to my love for photography, I love orchids too. I have several sitting in my bay window. I recieved an amarylis over the holiday and I have to admit, I've loved watching it grow. Selfies are damn hard. I took this one as part of a Themed Project 52. The first week's them was "Selfies". I know how important it is to get in front of the camera but as I've mentioned before, it's not easy when you're feeling self conscious. That being said, I knew I wanted this picture. I've wanted it for a while. I wanted to remember exactly how he fits in my arms right now. I set up the camera while he was eating breakfast with his daddy and started the timer as soon as it was nap time.

I am a crier| Lindsey Mix Photography in Wilmington Delaware https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2015/1/im-a-crier-lindsey-mix-photography-in-wilmington-delaware It's true. Any one of my family, friends and probably even distant acquaintances can confirm that I am - a crier. I have always been horribly empathetic and overly involved in other peoples' emotions. It's especially true when I'm sucked into a movie. It's for this very reason that I can't watch horror flicks. I get so involved my heart races, my blood pressure goes up, and I'm ready to call 911 when the wind blows against the house slightly louder than usual.

In addition to this being a horrible affliction during movies, it is a terrible weakness of mine when my friends cry...or a new mom cries when she talks about her new baby...or a dad...forgettaboutit.  I am instantly a puddle. Happy Cry, I'm with you. Broken Heart, I'm with you.

I'm not sure if you've been following Kleenexs' stock price but I can assure you that it's gone up. The past few weeks three of my dearest friends lost loved ones. Two of my friends; a brother and sister, lost their grandmother and the third, lost her mother. Just this past weekend, each were put to rest.

I stood at both funerals and watched each of my friends stand in front of a room full of people and declare their love for the one that had passed. They told stories of love and laughter with a sincerity that would bring a giant to his knees. I watched and wept as each of them stood with shaking hands and deep breaths and composed themselves so beautifully and honured their loved ones so genuinely. It takes such courage to honor a loved one at a funeral. Courage that I don't have.

I spoke with one of my friends at length about how our friends forgive us our weaknesses and our faults. That's when they become our family, the family we choose for ourselves. I am so very lucky to have such amazing friends in my life. They are friends that forgive me my shortcomings and love me anyway. I'm sorry that they're going through such a terrible time right now.

It sort of leaves me speechless.

So, with no way to wrap this up, I decided to link a commercial that we talked about this weekend... one that makes me cry my eyes out. Luckily, others confirmed that it gets to them to.

If you're a mom - this video is for you:

Christmas in Fenwick Island, Delaware| Lindsey Mix Photography https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2015/1/christmas-in-fenwick-island-lindsey-mix-photography My husband and I are so lucky that both of our parents live in such cool places. His, in the Adirondacks, and mine, in Fenwick Island. Christmas Eve this year we packed up the sled and headed south. I assured our five year old that Santa would definitely know where Nana's house was. I also assured her that he would also be more likely to deliver her much sought after nutcracker to Nana's house since they are used to decorate wall to wall!

That's right, my kid's sought after, must-have, can't.live.without gift request this year: a Nutcracker. I think she was slightly convinced that he would be magic and take her off to visit with the Sugar Plum Fairy but alas, that part was not meant to be.

It's next to impossible for me to summarize this time with my family by choosing just one picture a day. I could have picked pictures of the tree or the stockings...or the nutcrackers that lined the walls, but honestly...when I remember this Christmas, those aren't the things that I will treasure. A pretty tree is worth the memories, but a picture of the day...that goes to family:

Christmas morning my DSLR stayed on the kitchen counter and I hunkered down with my babies and watched the magic of Christmas. I watched the boxes pile up and the wrapping paper fly. I chased my little guy around trying to keep him from eating things he shouldn't. I spent that day with my family. Completely present.

I have a few iphone photos that will make it in the family album...but just so you can share a little of our Christmas joy with us, here's a video of my girl opening her Nutcracker from Santa.

The Cottage| Lindsey Mix Photography https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2015/1/the-cottage-lindsey-mix-photography As many of you know, my husband and I bought a renovation property at the very early part of December. It was a long, complicated process. The property is on deeded land, with two buildings, one of which was never finished..the other never received its certificate of occupancy. So, what's the story?

I meant to create a blog specifically dedicated to the renovation but the truth is, it's just not going to happen, so instead, I'll post updates here!

This all started last April 2014 when my husband's brother started talking about moving back to Delaware. My husband started looking at properties in the area and scouting them out for his brother's family. During the process, he started teasing his dad that since he and his brother would live so close, it would only make sense for his parents to move to the area too. Gentle recruiting. Since Zillow is the worlds easiest way ever to get sucked into looking at real estate for hours...my husband had now found a new hobby, shopping for other people.

Sure enough he came across this adorable 1 bedroom cottage:

And then, there was a picture of this in the same listing.

McLeod Family October 2014 - Lindsey Mix Photography-3The Main House

Our interest was peaked so we decided to go have a look. It was a whim...and outing. I never in a million years could have imagined what that whim would evolve into. We met with the realtor and she told us there was already an offer on it but the financing was not working out.

Fast forward a few weeks and we get a phone call that the offer fell through and it was still available.

We started making phone calls. We called realtors, looked for comps, called appraisers, called banks, called contractors, and just about anyone else that might have a valuable opinion.

At the end of the day, it all made sense. There was no way we could afford this size house, in this part of Delaware for this price. We put in an offer.

The biggest hold up was waiting for the Certificate of Occupancy to be issued by the county. The bank had made the loan contingent on the Certificate so we wrote it into our offer. It took a lot longer than anticipated but finally came through the first week of December.

So now what?

We had to get the cottage ready ASAP in order for renters to move in. This was the only way we could stay in our current house and be able to handle the 2nd mortgage AND the renovation costs.

So that weekend we got to work. The work was minimal in the grand scheme of a renovation but it sure took a ton of man hours. We repaired and sanded all of the walls. That alone took an entire weekend. Then we painted every square inch of wall and trim. We had a family friend come balance the ceiling fans which took the greater part of an afternoon, we replaced the leaking fridge and old utility tub.

Three weekends later with both of our dads and family friends putting in some elbow grease and we were ready for renters.

We had over FOURTY different emails about renting the place. I was blown away. In fact, we still get inquiries even though the renters we chose moved in January 1!

So, here we are...just over a month later and the cottage is finished and rented!

So, where are we with the main house?

Well, we've been working with an Architect for a few weeks now. Working within the confines of the walls, keeping the windows in place has turned out to be pretty tricky.

I'll post more about that soon!

Where did December go?| Lindsey Mix Photography https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2015/1/where-did-december-go-lindsey-mix-photography Does anyone else feel like they just lost an entire month? I honestly can not believe it's January 7th. We closed on our renovation project December 3. We immediately went to work painting and getting the cottage ready to be rented. Every free moment from December 3 to December 21 was spent at the cottage. Mix in there a birthday, some Christmas parties, shopping, a trip to Fenwick Island for Xmas and a month of contacting contractors, architects, waste pick up, and other miscellaneous calls and I.AM.SPENT.

This is how my little man spends half of his time; trying to sleuth out his escape route.

The Alpine Homestead Bed & Breakfast| Lindsey Mix Photography in Wilmington, DE https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2014/12/the-alpine-homestead-bed-breakfast-lindsey-mix-photography-in-wilmington-de The Alpine Homestead is this incredible "little" house way up in the boonies of the Adirondacks. It's the kind of place that lives up on a tiny hill, nestled in the mountains, that just makes your worries melt away. You can see it as your drive down Rt 9 just welcoming you with its bright orange door and beautiful green shutters. If you want to take a look, or go for a visit, you can check them out here. If you book a room, just make sure you tell them I sent you!

My in-laws decided to call this place home shortly after my husband and I met. In the years since then, they've turned it into the most beautiful, quaint, successful Bed & Breakfast you can imagine. It's home to us, but I suspect if you were to ask anyone of their guests over the years, they'd say it felt like home too.

We alternate our holidays between my husbands family and mine. That means this year, we were up at the B&B for Thanksgiving. I struggle with my photography during family time. I rush to pick up my camera when I see a tender moment or a sweet embrace...and sometimes when I'm sure people expect me to reach for it, I just sit. Why? Those are the moments I want to keep in my heart.

There was a study done recently that said the more pictures you take, the less likely you are to have a true memory of that event, instead you remember the pictures. That's a tough pill for a photographer to swallow...but one I took a full dose of.

So, I have some pictures from our visit, and in another blog post down the road you'll see some of Christmas from my family, but what you won't see are the memories I hold in my heart. Those are just for me.

It's been over a month! | Lindsey Mix Photography https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2014/12/its-been-over-a-month-lindsey-mix-photography This time of year just flies! I can't believe it's been over a month since my last blog post. Since then we've celebrated both of my kids birthdays, gone to the amazing Alpine Homestead B&B for Thanksgiving, bought a house to renovate, celebr

ated my husband's birthday, painted & worked on the cottage (at the renovation site), and found tenants to rent to. Oh, and we decorated the Christmas tree and are trying to get into the spirit of Christmas. Throw in some mini sessions at Bellevue State Park in Wilmington, DE, a maternity session along the Wilmington Riverfront and we have been hanging on by the seat of our pants!!

Hobbies and Such | Lindsey Mix Photography in Wilmington, Delaware https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2014/11/my-loves-lindsey-mix-photography-in-wilmington-delaware Just after my daughter was born I decided to teach myself how to knit. I watched you tube videos, checked out library books, and dove head first into knitting hats. I even opened an etsy store which has gone dormant for time being. I knew then that I eventually wanted to knit stockings for my family but I knew it was a pretty big committment. Last year, as my second and final baby was due, I knew it was time to start working on them. He arrived in November and took over our world so the stockings had to wait.

So, here we are a year later and it's finally time to buckle down. This is my first sock, my first stocking, and my first try at knitting a Fair Isle pattern. More you tube videos and I think I've got it under control:

I walked in from work last week to find my little man zonked out on daddy. We both know these days are numbered so when we have a chance to snuggle our little man, we don't hesitate. We hunker down and enjoy the sweetness.

I call this next one "The Flight of the Ellie". Both of my kids have a small elephant blanket. Actually, they have 3. When my daughter was little we got duplicates. Shortly after I realized how prized they were, I bought another "Just in case." So, when I found an identical blue Ellie while expecting my son, I didn't hesitate to buy 3. One for home, one for school, and a rotating one for the wash!

Both kids eventually reached an "empty my crib" phase where they'd wake up, and everything in the crib suddenly ends up on the floor. I LOVE that I was able to catch him doing this.

Halloween 2014| Lindsey Mix Photography https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2014/11/halloween-2014-lindsey-mix-photography Halloween has to be one of the best holidays ever. It's fun for all sizes. As a kid - its a day to dress up and dive head first into a bowl full of candy. In your twenties, it's an excuse to indulge that inner child and hit the town to see just how creative people can get. As a parent,  It's a single day about completely giving in to your child's imagination. I LOVE IT.

Here's a few shots from our day. It started with a parade at my son's day care and ended with friends running through the streets of our neighborhood. It couldn't have been a better day.

I thought for sure he'd be walking by 10 months like his big sis but he's really taking his grand old time. That's AOK by me. I know once he walks, it's only a few short weeks until running!

Mini Sessions, Crawling, and more|Lindsey Mix Photography in Wilmington, Delaware https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2014/10/mini-sessions-crawling-and-more-lindsey-mix-photography-in-wilmington-delaware Is it me or does the fact that the sun is setting earlier make your blood pressure go up just a bit more? It feels like the days are suddenly a little shorter and there's just no time.

My mini sessions are booking up but there are still spots available if you're looking for an amazing deal. You can read about them here!

I'm wrapping up editing for one of the most adorable newborn sessions ever and am so excited to get started on editing a family session from this past weekend!

We're having tons of conversations about our new house, making phone calls, drawing sketches, making appointments, looking for renters, and closing is just around the corner. I haven't started a house blog just yet but hopefully soon!

For now, here's a few more pictures from my Project 365:

The Mini Session| Lindsey Mix offering Family Photography in Wilmington, DE https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2014/10/the-mini-session-lindsey-mix-offering-family-photography-in-wilmington-de Are you busy? Me too! This time of year is so crazy. Halloween, bday parties, Thanksgiving around the corner, and sure enough the stores are already decorating for xmas. I can't believe it!

A few people have asked me if I would be doing mini sessions this fall. It seems that there's some demand for people that aren't quite ready for a full session, but want to have a great portrait for xmas cards or maybe to make a few photo gifts for their family.

So, without further ado, yes, I will be offering mini sessions and the first one is THIS SUNDAY! If you're interested, just shoot me an email and we'll get you on the books!

Ready for the bonus? If three of your friends or family sign up for a session, your session is free!!

Every year I get this grand idea to participate in a local consignment sale. It always SEEMs like a good idea until I actually sit down to label, tag, and hang every single piece of clothing we have to sell. This year I only got to about half of what I meant to... here's the "during" shot:

My husband and I took a little field trip to a local stone place just to get an idea of what we're looking for in our new home. We walked around for about an hour when I saw one sheet of tile thown in the back corner of the warehouse. I pointed and told the sales person it was EXACTLY what i was looking for. She explained that she had no idea what it was called because they don't sell it there, a designer had left it behind. She cut me off a piece and wished my luck finding it. Sure enough, I found it online in under 10 minutes!

Day 51(and more) of 365| Lindsey Mix Photography https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2014/9/day-51-and-more-of-365-lindsey-mix-photography Sometimes the kids are in bed, it's late and I realize I need to take a picture. I played with the one below for a while. It was dark so I was using a table lamp and the elephant was kind enough to pose quietly while I played with different light, angles, and apertures. I bought this guy last summer in Laos. Project 365 - Lindsey Mix Photography

A New House| Lindsey Mix Photography in Wilmington Delaware https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2014/9/a-new-house-lindsey-mix-photography-in-wilmington-delaware I'm over a month into my Project 365- If you're just catching up or peeking in for the first time, it's a photography project based on daily shooting. For me, the purpose is to practice. I want to practice the mechanics of the camera, learn more about my speedlight and lenses, the art of observation, looking for light (and shadows), and everything else. Some nights it's all I can do to find a subject (Look for a tiny elephant as the star of a photo later this week) other days it's fun to really sit down and plan out a shot.

This past week, there was no planning. It was all I could do to get my WB right before shooting. Time was short.

This was my girl and her BFF the day after their sleepover. They were FRIED. They've been friends since the day Sutton was born and there is nothing I'd love more than for that friendship to stand the test of time. I think they're off to a pretty great start.

Sometimes I have to take off my mommy glasses and remind myself to get my husband in the picture too! Here he is playing Peek-A-Boo!

Lindsey Mix Photography - Project 365New House, Best Friends, and More

I love taking his picture when he's in his high chair. It means he's not going anywhere and certainly can't get his little fingers into my lens!

Lindsey Mix Photography - Project 365New House, Best Friends, and More

This one was Sutton's idea. I'm trying to allow here some "creative freedom" in helping me shoot. She designed this shot...."I'll wear this, mama. Everett can sit on his truck. Wait, let me move it over here...now you sit there mama...no, over a little bit."

Lindsey Mix Photography - Project 365New House, Best Friends, and More

And here it is - The biggest part of our week. We put an offer on a house and this was taken the day after it was accepted. It's a renovation project that will get a blog of it's very own, hopefully this weekend. Stay tuned!

Sherron's Maternity Session| Lindsey Mix Photography https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2014/9/sherrons-maternity-session-lindsey-mix-photography You know when you meet someone and you know within 5 seconds that you're going to really like them? That's what it was like to meet Sherron and her family. I spoke with Sherron during her pre-session consultation and we went over wardrobe and what to expect. I explained that I'm really trying to take my photography in a more photo-journalistic direction with the focus being on capturing the connection between her family, rather than the traditional, posed pictures. We talked about her interests and how she really still wanted some of those poses. I assured her we could do both!

I had scouted out a new loacation in Wilmington, DE. and couldn't have been more excited to shoot there. The second her family stepped out of the car, I knew we were going to have an awesome time. Sherron has an infectious smile, a personalbe husband, and two absolutely amazing kids. They were sweet and reserved but came out of their shells in no time!

Kiddos & New Cars| Lindsey Mix Photography in Wilmington Delaware https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2014/9/sisters-new-cars-lindsey-mix-photography-in-wilmington-delaware I can't believe my baby boy is 9 months old. He's crawling, jabbering, exploring, and just an absolute joy. Watching the relationship develop between him and his sister is aw-inspiring. She is so loving and cuddly. She's quick to comfort him and wants to pick him up constantly.

Here she was trying to get him to look at the camera. Her idea of how that should work and mine were a bit different...

This was Thursday night, I think. She was falling to pieces at dinner time. Her almost 5 year old body just wasn't emotionally capable of one more conversation. She whined, stomped, and argued. She finally went upstairs, begrudgingly, while I got Everett into bed. I finished nursing him about 20 minutes later and went into her room to read her a book and this is what I found:

Lindsey Mix Photography - Wilmington Delaware Newborn & Family PhotographerProject 365 Lindsey Mix Photography - Wilmington Delaware Newborn & Family PhotographerProject 365

My newest baby. In 2009 we knew we were getting ready to start a family. We went car shopping, read Consumer Reports, compared, negotiated and eventually came home with a Subaru Forest. I hated it within a week. I had been used to driving my 2002 Nissan Xterra and I suddenly realized that I was NOT a car person. I need to see over everyone. I need a big truck. So, I've patiently waited and shopped. I've drooled over big SUVs and tapped my foot. Finally, we paid off the Subaru. HOORAY!! So, this is what we got to take it's place:

Family Selfies and Cats that aren't ours| Lindsey Mix Photography Wilmington, Delaware https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2014/9/family-selfies-and-cats-that-arent-ours-lindsey-mix-photography-wilmington-delaware If I'm being real, getting in front of the camera is a love/hate issue for me. I desperately want to have pictures of me with my kids. I want to treasure everything about each day as it speeds by and I hold on for dear life. I want to be part of the memory. But then, I look at a picture of myself, still holding on to "baby weight" 9 months later and it's hard. It's hard not to be critical and sad. It's hard not to be mad at myself for letting that weight take over my joy of photographs. It's hard to really *want to be in the pictures.

But then I took this class by the amazing Lisa Tichane called Capturing Joy. She talks about how her mom passed when she was 13 and she doesn't have a single picture of her and her mom together. It was a real eye opener. I needed to get over myself.

So, I've embarked on a selfie journey, one that includes pictures I'm not horrified to share online. I've canned over 200 in the past several days, but I've also been figuring out what works. I hope that in the year to come, if nothing else, I will learn to enjoy being in front of the camera too, if not for appearances sake, for the joy of knowing that one day, my kids will look back at them and they won't see what I see, they will just see "mom".

I took this one with a timer JUST before a storm rolled in. It was a desperate moment and not the best shot but I love that we all have these crazy looks on our faces!

The next day I wanted to try again! So, a remote in hand...I dragged everyone outside one more time. *Note, The cat by my head is NOT our cat. Never has been, never will be, despite his best efforts.

Newborn Harper

I remember walking in to Amy and Tim's house that day and Amy looked so amazing. She looked like a new mom, 100% in love with the baby girl she had just brought home. She was at ease and confident. Motherhood looked so great on her.

Here we are a year later and it's been so awesome to see Harper grow from that tiny little snuggle bug into a toddling, curious, smiling, one year old. Her mom & dad have grown this year too, really more than any heart can imagine.

They brought her to my house this time, for a whole new adventure in outside photography, sugar highs, and bubble baths. So.much.fun!!

First Day of Kindergarten| Lindsey Mix Photography https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2014/9/first-day-of-kindergarten-lindsey-mix-photography My oldest started kindergarten this week. That morning, I woke up early and laid in bed wide awake, in the wee hours of the morning waiting for what feelt like the most momentous event in her life so far to start.

I've mentioned before how much I dislike that age old cliche "they grow up so fast" but damn if it isn't the truest thing I've ever heard. I feel like I was just writing her a letter for her first birthday, or teaching her how to get dressed or brush her teeth on her own.

In that letter, I promised to try to be patient and to listen. I told her I'd try to seize the "teachable moments". I told her I'd try. I haven't been 100% successful. I've lost my temper. I've laughed when she's tripped instead of helping her up. I mean, let's be real....tripping is funny. I've teased her and taken advantage of her believing everything out of my mouth is true.  I've given her fast food when healthy foods were just too time consuming. I've been imperfect. I suppose embracing that is a lesson in itself, probably too big for either of us to fully grasp just yet.

I've also held her hand as she's navigated a whole new world as a "big kid". This world with big kid emotions, and good vs. evil. A world with life and death where people are both kind and...Not. We've baked cookies and learned how to play board games, ride a bike, and matched clothes and shoes. We've done princess braids in our hair and danced to "Walking on Sunshine" a bazillion times. We've watched movies and cartoons and we've had tickle fights until neither of us could breath.

We sure have had fun.

I read Oh the Places You'll Go by Dr. Seuss to her the other night. She will never know just how amazing that story is for the mama heart. It touches everything you could ever want for you child. If you haven't read it in a while, give it a shot...the line "kid, you'll move mountains" brings tears to my eyes every single time.

I am so excited for her. I'm so excited for this adventure. I wanted to do something special for her as she took on this new adventure so I made her a poster. She may not get it yet, but I hope she will some day. I ordered it to hang in her room. It has more love wrapped up in one little phrase than any letter I could possibly write.

So, here it is, for my girl, as she starts her journey into kindergarten: Lifestyle Photography by Lindsey Mix in Wilmington DelawareLifestyle Photography by Lindsey Mix in Wilmington Delaware

My girl is back in Delaware | Lindsey Mix Photography https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2014/8/WilmDe I titled this blog post "My girl is back in Delaware" but I guess she hadn't really left the state. She spent last week down with my amazing parents in Fenwick Island, DE. This summer she's spent a total of four weeks away from home. It was a way for us to keep her out of day care for a while and save a little bit before she heads off to Kindergarden next Wednesday.

Four weeks away...anyone with an almost five year old knows that's four very quiet weeks at home. It was a chance to clean, organize, and (don't tell her)seriously purge some toys.

She's had a bit of a hard time getting used to Mommy and Daddy's rules again. She's been emotional and waking up in the middle of the night. Part of me wonders if she was too young to be gone so much. The other part of me knows how good it is for her to spend time away and to build her relationships with the rest of her family. We know that not everyone is so lucky to have such amazing grandparents for our kids.

So, now that she's home,  and it'stime for her to really join my project 365!!

Here she is hiding in the hamper from her little brother:

Teaching your kids photograrphy, project 365,My girl is home!

I took her on a scouting adventure for some new photography spots in Wilmington on Friday night. She was absolutely delighted to take "her" camera along:

Kids & a Camera, Project 365My Girl is Home!

Yesterday, I had a Cake Smash in the morning followed by a Maternity Session in the afternoon so the kids went on an adventure with their daddy. I knew they were up to no good when I saw them pull in the driveway and Sutton carefully stepped out and tip toed towards the front door clutching something in her hands...

She had her very own pet, "Rex". She was so incredibly proud and excited. While I think I may have had the two best Client session so far yesterday (Which I can't wait to share!), this little "first" was the photo of the day that's going down in the record books for Project 365:

And so it begins - 365 days of photography https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2014/8/and-so-it-begins---365-days-of-photography As I've mentioned before, I belong to an incredible photography community called Clickin Moms. Several women on there and I'm sure on other photography forums encourage daily shooting. Watching them grow and explore their creative outlet through daily shooting has inspired me to start my own 365 day project. I'm not sure I'll be able to keep up but I'm sure going to give it a shot.

So far, so good. 13 days in. Something I've already learned in this process is when you're forced to pick one picture a day, it really forces you to narrow it down and look at each one closely, to analyze and inspect the various elements.

What I've discovered is that sometimes the one that I end up picking is the furthest from technically perfect, but more importantly, the closest to my heart. Watching my kids grow feels like the last breeze of summer, you didn't realize it was the last one until it's gone.

I look forward to sharing my journey with all of you!

Georgia is 8 Months Old! | Lindsey Mix Photography https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2014/7/georgia-is-8-months-old-lindsey-mix-photography "They grown up so fast!" Oh how that sentence makes me cringe! I feel like every sunrise and sunset my kids are visibly growing before my eyes. Whether it's witty banter from my 4 year old or a new milestone for my 7 month old, It's happening daily! That sentence is something people whisper to you in the hopes that you'll slow down and enjoy every bit of it, but when it comes to friends with tiny little people of their own, it's said with a certain "uh-huh" that brings out sympathy instead of just a simple nod.

So, that's why it seemed so important to sit down with tiny Georgia at this seemingly un-milestone of a day, 8something months old... Sitting, but not crawling yet, no tiny teeth, just perfect pudge and the most adorable smile you've ever seen.

But I don't have to tell you, her pictures are just the absolute perfect capture of who she is right now, and maybe even some tiny glimpses into who she is going to be. This girl makes my heart smile in so many ways!

An Alaskan in Delaware| Lindsey Mix Newborn Photography https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2014/6/an-alaskan-in-delaware-lindsey-mix-newborn-photography I can't even begin to tell you how excited I was when my husband's cousin, Megan, reached out to me and asked if I'd take their newborn pictures. She went on to tell me that they'd be coming to the east coast, just over the Delaware border in PA to deliver baby #2. They live on a tiny little island in Alaska and wanted to be with Megan's mom when the baby arrived!

After an adventurous delivery at home, Megan called me to tell me her adorable baby boy, Zephyr, was ready for his pictures.

I walked into the clubhouse and the family just radiated calmness. They had a very quiet demeanor that seemed to match their Alaskan lifestyle. Even their 2.5 year old spoke softly and just quietly took it all in.  Akaran May 2014Baby Zephyr and his beautiful familyAlaska meets Pennsylvania!

Daddy started giving his baby boy kisses as I was changing my settings so I said "Oh that's great! Can you give him more Eskimo kisses?" Suddenly, I was faced with a horrific fear that I had just said something offensive! Thankfully, Megan assured me that rubbing noses could indeed be referred to as Eskimo kisses.

The Mazzi Family |Lindsey Mix Photography https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2014/5/the-mazzi-family-lindsey-mix-photography I have been crazy busy taking pictures of families and newborns from Wilmington, Delaware all of the way up to Valley Forge National Park in PA! My Spring Special is selling well and things are really getting busy!

When I first opened my photography business, I did what most business people do and checked out the local market, my "competition". Then, I started joining photography communities, facebook groups, and forums. I couldn't believe the wealth of knowledge that was out there and how willing everyone was to share.

In one of these groups, I was able to meet a great friend and local photographer, Kate Mazzi. After some going back and forth and schedule rearranging, we set up a family photography swap!

I can't even begin to tell you how nerve wracking it is to take pictures for another photographer. But once Kate and her family showed up, they made it so easy! Kate is an absolutely a joy to photograph and her kids are the perfect mix of silly and serious!

So, here's a little a little peak at our time together:

Afterwards, Kate and I made time for a joinme.com meeting and reviewed our pictures with each other and had the opportunity to give each other amazing feedback. I so appreciate the time I got to spend with Kate and her family and I can't wait to do it again!

Thank you Kate for sharing your beautiful family with me!!

Golder Maternity session at Rockford Park, in Wilimington, Delaware https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2014/4/golder-maternity-session-on-rockford-park-delaware Holly is one of those people that just emanates kindness. She has a gentle way about her that I doubt she realizes is even there. Her husband, Sam is one of those guys that just always seems to be smiling. Even when he's serious, he seems to be happy. So,  It's no suprise at all that their daughter is an absolute ray of sunshine.

I took Holly's maternity pictures way back in 2010 when she was pregnant with her first baby so of course I absolutely jumped at the chance to photograph her again!

Welcome to the World - Birth Photography https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2014/3/welcome-to-the-world---birth-photography My passion for photography really came to life after I had my first child. I quickly realized how fleeting the moments that fill up our daily lives really are. I became engrossed in trying to capture emotions, connections, and memories all with athe click of a shutter. I learned fast that there's a huge difference between a snapshot and a photograph. One freezes a moment, the other freezes a memory.

As my journey into photography continued and I started photographing other peoples' families.  I was quite humbeld by the trust they put in me to preserve those very precious memories. So when I was asked to memorialize one of my dearest friend's delivery of their third baby, I was overwhelmed. There wasn't a chance I could say no.

For those out there that know me, they know I am rarely at a loss for words, but writing about this experience, well, it leaves me floundering a bit.

I wish I could find the words to describe what an incredible experience this was for me. Then again, if I were meant to be a writer, I wouldn't have been there with my camera. Instead of writing about it, I wrapped up every ounce of love I had and put it into my photography. It is with humble pride that I'm sharing their story with you. Welcome to the world Georgia Marion. May you one day see this and understand just how greatly you were loved from the very moment you came into our lives.

Out and About https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2014/3/up March 21st brought with it the promise of spring and slightly warmer temperatures here in Delaware. We got up to a whopping 65 degrees on Saturday which is a natural light photographer's dream come true after a winter full of deep snow and sub-zero wind chills.

We spent the day outside, cleaning up the yard, roller skating, and even took a quick ride to the park.

I love going on adventures with my 4 year old. She's fiercely independent speeding ahead. But, just went she would get far enough away to be on the edge of my comfort zone, she would stop, turn around, and check on me.

This picture is such an excellent showcase of where she is in life right now, a little bit ahead of me, but still making sure I'm there.

Night Light https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2014/3/night-light I remember telling a friend once that being a mom is the best secret that no one can tell. You just can't comprehend the all encompassing love that comes from loving another person so completely, so intensely. And then, to have another baby and to feel it all over again, there are no words in any language. There are no pictures. There is only a silent bond that links us all together.

As a photographer, I want nothing more than to capture even a tiny little smiggin of that emotion.

I knew exactly what I wanted to do with this assignment, "Night Light". I wanted to capture the purity of sleep. The peace, calm, and serenity that comes with watching a baby sleep.

Life is busy. We go, go, go. But this moment, when I can hear him softly breathing as the hall light falls softly across his crib...this is bliss.

A Pair https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2014/3/a-pair If you're just catching up, I'm participating in the iheartfaces.com March 30 day challenge...sort of. It's likely going to be more like a 90 day challenge to me but I'm getting side tracked.

Tonight's post is "A Pair". A pair! A pair? My two dogs? My two kids? A pear?!

This is where I landed:

Round https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2014/3/round This challenge is much harder than I had imagined. There just aren't enough hours in the day!! I've decided I'm going to keep going with the iheartfaces.com challenge but I'm going to have to take my time with it. A post a day is just a bit much for me AND my family right now.

So, without further ado, the next project is "Round". I snapped this one last Sunday as we dropped my daughter off with my amazing parents. So, this one is taking in the car sun visor as my husband drove:

On the go https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2014/3/on-the-go Three days a week I'm up at 5:30am, assuming my little man hasn't gotten me up at 4:45 or 5:00...In the shower, getting ready, getting the 4yr old ready, getting the 3 month old ready. My husband shares those duties, takes care of the dogs, scrapes the ice off of the cars, and well, you get the picture.

Anyone with kids and a job or an early morning appt probably has a pretty good idea of what our mornings look like. Today I was supposed to capture "on the go". The irony of wanting to stage everything just right to get the perfect shot of us on the go was not lost on me. Instead, I ran out of time so there was no staging. In fact, there were only 6 quick, horrible shots at 1/40...oh well, here we are on the go.

Friends https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2014/3/friends Today's challenge is "Friends"; another interesting challenge. Not because taking pictures of friends is hard, but taking pictures of "friends" on a school night, after 6pm is hard. Ideally, I would be posting the most adorable picture of my daughter and her baby brother and the budding friendship between them. But on a school night, after 6...not.gonna.happen.

I tried to take a picture of her and our 12 year old mutt fast asleep. The mutt refused to pose and my daughter was so covered up it was a total miss.

So then I realized I was missing one of the most cherished friendships in our whole family. A friendship that just last week was in jeopardy due to a potentially terrible diagnoses. Our vet was almost certain that our 5 year old pit bull had lymphoma. Imagine our relief to find out it was just a really nasty infection.

The friendship he has is with my husband. This dog is loyal to a fault. He cuddles with the ferocity of a lion and licks with the animation of the energizer bunny. He loves my husband as if that's his one and only purpose in life. Man's best friend.

Colorful https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2014/3/colorful My 4 year old is less than thrilled with Mommy's new project. Today's "assignment" from iheartfaces is Colorful. I've spent the past few days trying to figure out what in the world I would photograph. I even took my camera to my *other job today hoping that inspiration would strike. Much to my daughter's chagrin, I had no such luck.

So, I walked in the door and promptly asked her to dress up. Normally she would be elated. But on a Wednesday night at 6:00pm, she was not pleased:

Sad Fairy

The only way I could get her to even TRY to participate was to hand her the camera and take turns.

A little love

And finally, I got this one:

Colorful

and she got this one, not too shabby for 4.

Smiles https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2014/3/smiles I thought this iheartfaces challenge would be a great way to force myself to get out my camera in less than stellar conditions. I was SO right. Tonight was a tough assignment - Smiles. I didn't think of it until 9:30pm... long after my two most smiley resources were in bed.

But really when I saw the assignment, I knew what I wanted to post. A smile that has drawn me in, captured my heart, and absolutely lights up my world every time I see it. This one is from Saturday.

Where I am. https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2014/3/where-i-am iheartfaces - March Challenge. Day 3. "Where I am"

It was another snow day here in the great state of Delaware. While I lust over dreamy photographs of winter wonderlands across the world, I have ZERO desire to bundle up and head outdoors myself. So instead...I'll watch from my window.

Snow PlowsWarm inside!

And just as dusk settles in the animals come out.

And as cold as it is outside, I have plenty to keep my heart warm.

Where I am. This photograph means more to me than anyone could possibly know. My 4 yr old took it. My tiny baby is in it. I AM IN IT. It's where I am. Where my heart is. Far from technically perfect but so full of love....it's where I am.

You have to start somewhere! https://www.lindseymixphotography.com/blog/2014/3/you-have-to-start-somewhere It's not easy to write about your life. It requires a transparency and eloquence that I just don't come buy naturally. So, instead I will take pictures. I will write about things that interest me. There might be a few things about raising kids, or being a working mom, but for now...it's about the photography in my life.

I've decided to take part in the iHeartFaces Monthly Challenge.
