What Roof? | Lindsey Mix Photography

We've heard it a thousand times. "You guys are crazy." or "We could never do that." or "You've lost your minds". We always laugh and calmly reassure the people around us that we're comfortable with what we're doing and totally sane.

That was until I saw the house last week without a roof. Not just missing a roof, but with it's roof crumpled on the ground in the front yard. The one thing I wasn't prepared for during this whole process was how upsetting all of the demolition would be. Every.single.time. something gets torn down, it makes me so sad. It's such a strange feeling, to be so attached to somewhere I've never lived. Since then, the third floor has been completely removed and the subfloor for the 2nd floor has been removed.

So, standing on the ground in what will be our foyer, you can straight up to the clear blue sky...or today, stand there and get rained on...

It's exciting to see the progress but it's hard to see someone's life's work falling to pieces. So, now that the roof is off, the framing is really going to get moving. The first floor framing is about 2/3s done. Now, they'll start moving up and we have a tentative date for the framing to be done: September 4th. That means, new roof, all of the walls, a real house will be underway!

Beyond the house construction we are trying to get our house in Hockessin ready to go on the market. I've been a maniac cleaning and purging. We'll likely put it on the market in mid September. We've also got the kids set up (mostly) at their new schools.

It's a lot.

I just told a friend it feels like when I first brought home my baby girl, I had NO idea how mind-consuming it would be to have a baby. This feels similar. I'm always thinking of what's next, what haven't we done, what do we need to order, what do we need to pick out, what haven't we thought of?

It's a lot.

It's A LOT.

But, one foot in front of the other, one decision at a time and we'll get there. This time next year, it will all be a blur.
